Cantojiu the Oldest tample in Bangladesh

 


This is the traditional Kantjir temple in Dinajpur, Bangladesh.The temple is famous for its mythological purchases on the temple walls. The construction of the temple was completed in 1752 after 48 consecutive years of construction.

 Originally the temple consisted of navaratnas or nine pinnacles which collapsed in the 897 earthquake.

 At the beginning of the 20th century Maharaja Girijanath Bahadur did extensive renovation work on the temple, but the spires of the temple could not be renovated anymore. This temple is famous among the Bengali architecture. The mythological stories are perfectly depicted on the walls in terracotta decorations, which sometimes take us to medieval Bengal and sometimes represent the mythological stories. For these purchases, Kantjiu temple catches anyone's attention. There are about 15 thousand takas in the whole temple. These takas are not similar to each other, but the pictures of them are telling different stories.

 In these terracotta tablets, various stories of the social life of Bengal at the end of the Middle Ages have been described and the stories of Ramayana, Mahabharata and various Puranas have been depicted. Satya Treta Dwapar Kali, the mythological stories of these four classical ages are perfectly depicted on the four walls of the temple. Khanda Shilpa is said to be a mythological epic and the temple is not painted as seen in Odisha and South Indian temples.

 According to the tradition of the temple, there is a 15-day long fair held every year on Ras Purnima. You can also visit the traditional Kantjiu temple by taking a bus from Pirganj to Kantnagar from Dinajpur Central Bus Terminal.
