History of Thakurgaon District In ancient times, a police station was established near Burdwan Municipality area during the British rule by a Thakur family of this township. According to the name of this family, the place is named Thakurgaon Thana. Because of the majority of Brahmins, this place is named Thakurgaon. It was declared as Mahakuma in 1860. Under this Mahakuma there were 6 police stations namely Thakurgaon Sadar Baliadangi Pirganj Ranishankoil Haripur Patuari 1947 Thakurgaon started a new journey as a sub-district of 10 police stations with 6 thanas and three police stations of Jalpaiguri district of India and one in Cooch Behar, but in 1981, when a separate sub-district called Panchagarh Boda Debiganj Tentulia-Panchgarh was created, Thakurgaon's geographical boundaries were reduced to five police stations. Thakurgaon Sadar, Pirganj, Baliadangi and Haripur Hazar were elevated to Thakurgaon district on 1st February 1984.
